communism

It’s quite briliant of Dr. Strangelove to come to classes, sometimes wearing some sort of symbol on himself. Whether it is a koufia or a Hammer and a Sickle t-shirt, this kind of symbolism tends to define whoever is baring them. However, he showed us that it does not always mean so. He is not a Communist. Despite the fact that by wearing such a t-shirt, he’s probably being prejudiced by others as a Commie, it might not be necessarilly true. When he wears them, people think that he is affiliated with so and so, but the reality of the matter is that he isn’t. It’s simply just like advertising. Products or services publically displayed in the media do not always seem to be what they really are. The meaning of things is not as clear and transperant when it comes to marketing.

According to Dr. Strangelove’s “The Empire of Mind”, many companies have been reported to use internet piracy to their advantage. They are advertising their products in Third-world countries by monopolizing the peoples’ access to programs and applications that they can afford to get. By giving away their products for free for a limited period of time, these companies are gaining a name for themselves in those regions were when they end up closing down the free versions and moving on to selling the product at reasonable prices, peoplpe would not think twice before purchasing their products and/or services. It’ s win-win situation. These companies, such as Softnyx, a Korean gaming company, developed many Online Multiplayer games over the years and after a while, they end up closing the “Beta” version of the game and start to charge people for the privilege of playing them. Such company did not have to spend anything to create their advertising campaign. They were simply showing the world that the game could be downloaded for free though others in other regions could get it for free. People then, becan uploading the game on programs such as Limewire and Kazaa, for the masses to download and play for free. It was intentional and it worked.
